Architects are universalists – they know a little bit of everything but nothing
much of anything.
Just sharing some of the research from my assignment.
Ever since the Industrial Revolution, carbon concentration in the atmosphere has increased by 30%. Annually, carbon concentration is increasing by 2.5 percent. Worst case scenario, the amount of carbon concentration before IR will double in 2045. And I don’t think I have to elaborate on the dark sides of C02: higher temperature, melting of polar caps, rising tides, failing crops, the list goes on. How is this our responsibility you ask? Unfortunately, almost every aspect of our life contributes to the size of our carbon footprint. An average person is responsible for emitting
11 tonnes of carbon a year. And 17% of that amount is from our
home electricity usage.
In my line of studies, we are learning on how to build homes that are carbon-neutral. So in the future, we are looking forward to building houses that fully utilize renewable energy, use efficient water systems, with good insulation and ventilation to achieve healthier and more comfortable homes.
But in the mean time, we need to do everything we can to cut our daily electricity usage. So heres some
easy peasy tips you can use to save our environment (as well as save on your monthly bill):
1. A student’s most used electrical appliance is our computer. So keep your computer in
sleep mode if you are not using it however rarely that is. Screensavers do not save energy. And switch off the power outlet when you sleep, this saves energy and is also good for the longevity of your laptop.
2. Bare in mind that your chargeable equipments from the charger still draw power when its fully recharged. And even though your ipod, phone or camera is not connected to the charger, there is still energy going out, literally, into thin air if the charger is still turned on! So always
unplug your charger.
3. Im a carbon criminal myself when it comes to using the remote to turn off the tv. But lets all be reminded that studies have shown that appliances on standby is responsible for 11% of home electricity use. So lets all
get our butt off the sofa and walk 4 steps to the tv and switch off the plug shall we. Other appliances may apply.
4. Water heater accounts to a quarter of our home energy use. However, hot water heater is usually included in the rent for most apartments. But it doesnt mean that if you are not paying the bills, you should use as much of the hot water to your liking. Always remember that increase in energy consumption, increase in burning of fossil fuels, increase in C02 emission in the atmosphere. So
cut your shower short by finding shorter songs to sing. :) Also
use cold water whenever possible like while brushing your teeth or doing the laundry.
5. Autumn is hovering, so instead of turning up the heater,
wear layers! Youll stop 1000 pounds of CO2 from emitting into the air. By reducing the thermostat by 1 degree C, you'll save 30% of from your bills. Oh body heat works too. So
cuddle up. What other reasons do u need? :)
6. Notice that the flushing system here is different from Malaysia. Here, most toilets have dual flusher where you can flush depending on the amount of your pee or poo (cant resist saying poo). Everytime you
use the half flush button, you save 5 litres of water! Why use more when you can do the job with less. Remember, that wasting water, wastes energy.
7. A healthy diet should not only be carb-free but also carbon-free! Processed meat uses a lot of energy and household water. If you eat meat-free meals every other day for a year, you would save 487 pounds of CO2. And if you
go vegetarian for a whole week you would save about 19 pounds of CO2. Of course going veggie for a week doesnt mean you get to double up on beef steaks and lamb kebabs the following week! :)
8. Remember that those
eco bags are our friends and always bring them along on your shopping spree…and hold their hands…like real best friends do. Them unrecyclable plastic bags are our enemies. And you don’t want to bring the enemy home with you do you? Well, do you??
9. Shop smartly. Dont buy rubbish like I do. For every kilogram of waste we throw out, we produce 1 kg of CO2. An average household throwing out 1 dustbin's worth of waste every week emits 1400kg of CO2 a year. Buy products that use less packaging so there are fewer to throw out. Better yet, just
buy less! :)
Gah, didnt mean to write so long. But hopefully we can adapt the tips into our home. Its very easy and really costs nothing at all to do too! If anyone has any other tips to add feel free to share. Lets all think, sleep, eat, and
live green. We can make a difference.
XOXO.
